This 1885 spelter copy of the original bronze honoring the creator of the first
moveable type, was installed at the Detroit Abend Post building until the building
was demolished in the 1920’s. Bertel Thorwaldsen, worked with his father as a wood carver and at age eleven entered Copenhagen School of Art. He lived in Italy for 23 years producing numerous works including his famous Lion of Lucerne.
